My late father has the capability of palm reading. He learned that ability when he was young. The reason why he learned to have that ability because he needed to have something to get recognition or appreciation from others. Apparently the practice of fortune telling by reading palms line, though not often, are still conducted until after he married my mother and gave birth to his children including me as the eldest. I was born in a small village in Balige, right on the edge of the beautiful lake Toba.
After I was born, we moved from Balige to Tanjung Enim, a small town, where there are coal mines, in South Sumatra, Indonesia. I grew up in this small town. My mother once told me that some predictions that my father did to someone became reality. For example when my dad predicted a neighbor that his life was not going to be long, not too long after that, he died. Since the incident, my mother forbade my father to continue the practice of fortune-telling by reading palms. At that time my father and mother have not studied the Christian faith which forbids the practice of fortune telling on people’s lives. My dad agreed but felt pity just to throw away that ability, and intended to teach it to me as the eldest son.
In early 1970, when I was a student at University of Sriwijaya, he taught me how to read palm lines by predicting my future. At that time I’ve learned a lot about Christianity, and know that the practice of fortune-telling is not permissible. But I did not dare to bring it to my father. Therefore, I just heard what is taught without any intention to trust or even use it. There are two predictions that I remembered, first, I was not going to be a rich man, and second, I’ll never be able to go abroad. For the first prediction, that I can not get rich, do not matter to me because I was not thinking of becoming rich (now, after my 62 years of age, then I think to be rich or richer). But for the second prediction, that I will never be out of the country was a matter of concern to me. Therefore, besides the fact that I know that God does not like the practice of fortune-telling, and the fact that I also really want to be able to travel abroad, I began to pray to God and try to resist my father’s prophecy.
The first answer to my prayer came in 1972 when the university where I studied held a study tour to Singapore and Malaysia, and I was selected to participate. At that time a group of students who could participate is limited. After returning from a study tour I said to my father, that his predictions are not precise, because I could go to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. I say this after returning from the study tour, because I should definitely leave. But my father’s alibi that he meant by to go abroad it should be a distant country.
Since then I began to dream to be able to travel abroad to a distant country. When I graduated from university and worked in one of the Indonesian government-owned bank, I got the assignment to learn about computers audit in Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand for two and a half months. That happened in mid-1984. I once again prove that I can change the outcome of my father’s prophecy to be otherwise. Unfortunately, my departure could not be witnessed by my father, because my father died a few months before my departure to New Zealand.
Since I considered my departure to New Zealand still not too distant from Indonesia, I began to dream about going to other countries such as Europe and America. The answer to this prayer come true. During my work in Indonesia’s state-owned banks, I have many tasks, such as auditing for our branches in Paris and London, and to attend various courses in Singapore and Hong Kong. I even got the opportunity to go to London twice, including the task of implementing the system at the London branch office. But I am still not satisfied, because I have not been able to visit the United States. I pray that my wife, my children and I could be living abroad, especially in New York. (Read the article about my testimony in TheSecret2BeRich.co.cc) The answer to my prayer came about in mid 1993, when I was transferred and assigned to a branch office in New York and worked there for four years.
At the time of my first summer vacation in NY, I brought my family to travel to Orlando to visit Disney Land. I also got the chance to take a course in San Francisco. On that occasion I took my wife and my daughter along so they can enjoy San Francisco and its Golden Gate, and also did a short visit to Los Angeles and Las Vegas on the weekends. My wife and I had the chance to go to Disney Land at Orlando once again when accompanying the President Director on a vacation to the USA with his wife. There we took a limo that can accommodate 15 passengers. It feels like an oil-rich businessman’s life, because almost everybody tried to see who was in the limo. The next visit of the President Director and wife was Mexico City to visit his friend who became ambassador there. I also accompanied him on this trip. Therefore I can prove that denying the prophecy had taken me to visit the capital city of Mexico. On that occasion, we even had time to visit and stay overnight in Acapulco’s famous sights.
When there were long weekends, we usually traveled to areas not far from New York City, such as visiting Washington DC and the caves in Maryland such as Senandoa Cave, or go to Northern Virginia and back to NYC through the Chesapeake Expressway, which crosses the sea with a length of 16 mile. That location was used for the filming of the movie Die Hard. We also went to Philadelphia to visit a friend who studied there, or a trip to Maine to eat big shrimp or see the trees whose leaves change during the fall season. I once went to Atlantic City, because I must accompany guests who want to see that gambling town, without having to go gambling.
On my last summer vacation in New York, I drove my family to visit Niagara Fall. Then we visited Toronto to ascend to the highest tower there and to Montreal to see the stadium which is the former place where the Olympic Games were held. After seeing some of the area in Montreal, we headed to Thousand Islands to look for lodging. But because all the hotels had the no vacancy sign, we continued to Ottawa. We entered the Ottawa around 01:30 o’clock in the morning. We only stayed to sleep in Ottawa. In the afternoon we continued our journey to Vancouver. We entered the city of Vancouver in the afternoon. We stayed in town for 2 nights to enjoy the tour. Then we re-entered the territory of the USA with a straight move down from Vancouver through Boston to Cape Cod to stay there for 2 nights and go whale watching.
On the way back to Indonesia, we traveled to Amsterdam and Paris. In Amsterdam we visited the family and in Paris we visited the Louvre Museum and the Eiffel Tower.
Even after returning back to Indonesia, I still had a business trip to Santiago in Chile (1999) and Beijing in China (2005). It means quite a lot of cities in foreign countries I could visit even though I had been predicted to not be able to go abroad.
This testimony would indicate that we can determine or alter our own destiny. Do not leave our fate determined by a fortune teller. But do not forget to ask permission from God, who owns and holds our future. I hope my testimony will encourage you to determine your own future for the better.

What’s the best Canon Powershot digital camera (duh) camera? I want to buy for mostly “casual” images (christmas, birthdays, family reunions… that sort of stuff). And occasionally loads of cool artistic photos. I’m told which a 6-7 mm lens is a best… Other than of which, what else is fine???
